Lecture: «John Cage and American Art Culture of 1950-1960’s»

Please join us on Thursday, March 24 at 7-00 p.m., for a fascinating lecture about American cultural scene of 1950-1960s. These years were a period of tremendous political, social, and artistic activity in the United States. Lecture will reveal the excitement and inventiveness of American artists in the context of the varied and sometimes turbulent social environment as well as the expanding economy of postwar America. You will uncover different art movements of that era which moved the United States into the forefront of innovation. An explosion of artistic energy produced Minimalism, color-field painting, and hard-edged abstraction. American Art in the Sixties examines the key artists of that decade including Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns, two crucial transitional figures between Abstract Expressionism and the sensibilities of the new decade. In addition, you will learn interesting facts about iconic names such as John Cage, Willem DeKooning, Buckminster Fuller, Charles Olsen, Louise Nevelson and others. A succession of other movements followed, including Pop Art and the performance art of Merce Cunningham, video art and installation art of grand proportions. Do not miss out to hear all about it from Alexandra Danilova, Deputy Head, Department of 19th -20th Century European and American Art, The State Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts.
