Lecture: «Theodore Dreiser – the outstanding American practitioner of naturalism»

“The time is ripe for American intellectuals to render some service to the American worker.” – were Dreiser’s words at a meeting of left-wing writers in 1931. Dreiser’s considerable stature, beyond his historic importance as a pioneer of unvarnished truth-telling in modern literature, is due almost entirely to his achievements as a novelist. His sprawling imagination and cumbersome style added naturalism to his novels, where his compassion and empathy for human striving make his best work moving and memorable. The long novel gave Dreiser the prime form through which to explore in depth the possibilities of end of 19 – beginning of 20th-century American life, with its material profusion and spiritual doubt. At the seminar we will have a closer look into his first novel “Sister Carrie”. Please join us on Wednesday, October 10 at 7 p.m. Led by Anna Dvoretskaya, senior teacher of English at RANEPA, has a TESOL/TESL/TEFL certificate.
