Masterclass: Hawaiian Dance

Masterclass: Hawaiian Dance

International Hawaiian Dance School «Keola» welcomes all our patrons and guests to the master class of traditional Hawaiian dance – Hula. The Hula dramatizes or portrays the words of the chant or song in a visual dance form. Its ancient roots can be seen in the movements that symbolize nature with all its contrasts. Hula is a uniquely Hawaiian dance accompanied by song that preserves and perpetuates the stories, traditions and culture of Hawaii. Today, this enchanting art form has become a worldwide symbol of Hawaiian culture and the beauty of Hawaii’s people. There are many types and styles of Hula. Hula Auana (modern hula) is danced to western influenced music and features a more modern and fluid style. Hula kahiko (ancient hula) is danced to dramatic chants and percussion with more traditional costumes. Hula Auana is dedicated to bring happiness and pleasure, in contrary to Hula Kahiko, whose goal is to preserve knowledge and allow contact with higher energies. Though modern influence has touched Hula dancing, it still remains a beautiful dance to watch or perform. Please come to learn and experience artistry and elegance of Hawaiian dance on Monday, August 1, at 7p.m.
