Round Table talk: Vladimir Nabokov’s Oeuvre analysis

We are happy to announce a series of round table talks dedicated to Nabokov’s writing, entitled “Lectures on Russian Literature”. During our first discussion we are going to speak about the biography of Russian-American novelist Vladimir Nabokov, then proceed to a closer study of the opening page of Nabokov’s lecture on “Russian Writers, Censors, and Readers.” At the end of this round table talk, we will share with the audience our personal understanding of this lecture and will discuss what the phrase ‘the spirit of Russian literature’ means for Nabokov and for us, his readers. We will also discuss what kind of forces an author in nineteenth century Russia and under Soviet rule struggled against? Who is Nabokov’s ‘admirable reader’? How could we understand Nabokov’s notion that the gifted reader is a universal reader who is not subject to spatial or temporal laws? How do we perceive Nabokov’s idea that “of all the characters that a great artist creates, his readers are the best”?  Please join us on Thursday, October 20 at 7p.m. Discussion is led by Elena Neznamova – Associate Professor, MA in Psychosocial Studies – Birkbeck University, Fulbright-Kennan Institute Research Scholar.
