THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN BOARD GAMES

The American Cultural Center is glad to announce that it will launch a new social venue – History club. This will be a place for a history buffs. We all know the classics: Scrabble, Risk, Life and many others. But do you know how these games originated? Who invented them and what why? Could you imagine that Monopoly, a game that is famous for teaching American children the basics of capitalism, was meant to warn of the dangers and injustice of land ownership? Board games give us more than just a way to entertain ourselves, they are meant to teach us about society and its values. Looking at the history of board games is a unique way to learn about the changes in American culture throughout the generations. In this History Club, we will look at how board games taught Americans moral standards, how they were perceived by different social and racial groups, and how they reflected major cultural and political movements over the course of American history. Event is hosted by a native speaker from the United States. Please join us on Saturday, September 23 at 2.00 p.m. Meetings are held in English.
